This will be an informal (maybe not?) review, since I already wrote a long
one, but it got erased. Arrgh! And on my first review, too!

Background:

I bought this Emergency Response Center in LEGOLAND, so the price probably
could've been better. It was a spur of a moment thing (Oh, and my mom offered
to pay half of it...). I've been wanting to buy a smaller ResQ set, but the
Center looked cool too. So I jumped the offer...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Set number: 6479
Set name: Emergency Response Center
Piece count: 420
Theme/Subtheme: Town/ResQ
Price paid [S@H]: $62.95 [$66.00] (USD)

--------------------RATINGS-----------------------
(Scale:  Must-Have  Excellent  Very-Good  Good  Fair  Poor)

Set: Fair
Models: Ranging from Very-Good to Poor
Playability: Good

--------------------------------------------------

MINIFIGS: 5 figs. They were all pretty similar, with only small details
changing in the torso, and not too much differences and faces and headwear
(the faces: two sunglasses, one moustache, two eyebrows with ; the headwear:
three black caps, one helmet, and one black hair.). A nice surprise about the
minifigs was that their backs were printed as well as the front! I'd never
seen something really written on a fig's back! They all say ResQ on them. Cool.

ACCESORIES: There were TOO MUCH! (And I LOVE accesories.) I mean, c'mon,
*three full racks* of tools were on display - it's not like the figs even used
them with anything! (though they could...) And this is, like, the fourth set
in which I receive the tools wheel. Annoying.

RULING COLORS: black and yellow. All "glass" parts were trans dk blue, and
there were quite a few grey plates.

MODELS:

There were 7 (!)  models featured in the instructions: Dinghy, Trike, Tow
truck, Medium-sized boat, Helicopter, trailer, and the Base with the Building.

The first three models, the trike, trailer and dinghy were (as expected) short
to build. (6, 5 and 4 steps respectevly.) No surprises there - antennae,
walkie-talkie, the dinghy ended up on the trailer. No biggie.

The Copter was nice. Its main feature was the grappling hook. Otherwise, a
regular copter, as you'd see in town, police, etc. Trans dk blue windshield,
liftable. Two rotors, the usual. 16 steps - not too much, not too little.

The Boat followed. There was another hook here and a place to put the
stretcher. I'm no expert on boats, but it seemed regular, unexceptional. But
there was this new (I think) windshield piece (3x6x1), low sloped. It had only
two studs on it, and was mainly hollow. The only bottom parts that can connect
to anything look like low-sloped 1x3's, one on each side. This piece appreared
again in the main building (more about that later).
The boat was basically a nice part of the set.

Next came the 6-wheeled tow-truck. This was (IMO) the best part of the set.
Drawback - the black cab piece (also used in 4559?) took up the whole front
piece of the car. Otherwise, it was great. Not only was it 6-studs-wide, but
it had good features too. I liked the cabinets, they could be useful for those
millions of tools. Then come the hooks. These were REALLY nice: two seperate
rotatable arms held the two ropes. The ropes won't tangle up because they are
partly held in place. Last but not least, the top part is liftable so you can
place a driver, and it has lights on it - suitable for a truck.

Finally, the Main Building. I was surprised to see that by the time I
reached the main building, I didn't have much pieces left. This became later
explanetory, when I saw how the building is constructed.
On two 16x16 baseplates, the building is set. The baseplates are 2 and 1/3
bricks raised at the most - one of them is flat, while the other is a slope in
the middle (flat at the edges, though). The only studs on these are four rows -
two on each side.
The Building itself is very skimpy. It is mainly constructed from 1x1x5
towers, plus two 1x2x5 towers and one bay window (2x8x6). These are placed
in "strategic" places, with 1x something bricks connecting. It fell apart once
when I was building it. It's a sad sight.
Inside you'll find another poor sight. The whole interior consists of four
parts -
a "telephone" printed on a 2x2 slope;
a "radar" printed on a 2x2 slope;
a chair that sits on a turntable;
and, the worst, the Big Computer. This is made out of that 3x6x1 slope I
talked about earlier, but in white this time. On it, you stick a sticker. One
big sticker, with three "different" computers on it.
I hate it. I've been hoping for new computers for my lego community... :-| (1)

Also, the port area contains the three racks of accesories mentioned above,
two fire hydrants, a lifesaver, a space-antenna thingie, A landing pad for the
copter, and a radar dish.

This was IMO the worst part of the set.

CONCLUSION:
All in all, this set is a not-bad addition to my collection. The vehicles
are all nice, the piece assortment is great, but the building isn't.
Given a chance to buy it over again, I wouldn't. It isn't worth the price,
and I'd spend my money on a smaller ResQ set, which would have the good
vehicles and pieces. (2)

--------------------JUST STUFF--------------------
Cool pieces: stretcher, dinghy (my first!), Zip line pulley (dk grey), trike,
bay window (2x8x6, yellow frame w/trans dk blue glass).

Blah pieces: dock pieces (x2 black, x1 grey), 3x6x1 slope (1 trans dk blue, 1
white), four ropes.

Decals: 9 in total, 7 of them say ResQ on them (Zz...), 1 is the computer, and
the last is a lifesaver.

------------------------------------------

My favorite themes are train, town, and castle. This is my first encounter
with ResQ sets, they all look cool though.

This being my first review, please tell me what you thought, my e-mail is

(1) I'm thinking of cutting up the sticker into a few pieces, and dividing it
up to get three comps.
(2) If you like the baseplates, they're also in the 4556 train station.

(...) You forgot the best pieces! Two 6x24 grey plates, and a shuttle base (grey wing thingy). I like the docks too, use them for ship docks or train station platforms. Kevin (25 years ago, 29-Dec-99, to lugnet.reviews)
