Background:

My nephew's fourteeth birthday was coming up (not only do we share a first and
last name, but we also share initials and a birthday, very wierd) so I started
flipping through the most recent S@H catalouge. He is a big LEGO fan, and I
realized the perfect set for him: 5571. It was discontinued by then (the
second week of February 1999) so I rushed to the phone to order one for him.
And then I thought to myself, "Hey, I want one too!" So I ordered two of the
few they had left. This is, after all, the LARGEST LEGO set to date, so what
would an AFOL's collection be without one?
--------------------------------------------------
Set Number: 5571
Set Name: Giant Truck/Black Cat Rig
Piece Count: 1,742
Theme/Subtheme: Model Team/General
Price Paid (Retail)[S@H]: $139.00 ($129.99)[$139.00]

FIGURES: None

MODELS: There are two different models you can build with this set. I have
        built only the main one:

Rig(Main Model)- Wow! Wow! Wow! Did I say WOW? I LOVE IT. By far my
favourite LEGO set in a long time. Okay, it has one shortcoming, it only has
six wheels, but other than that, WOW! Okay, now where do I start? The engine.
Okay. Detailed, yes. I love the hood. The cat ornament is very cool, and so is
the windshield visor, showing you how detailed the vehicle is. The hood is
hinged to the vehicle in a very interesting way. It uses the traditional
LEGOLand fence on hinges. Good idea, but it fall's off easily. The V-8 engine
is just about as detailed as any other MT set, using 2x2 rounds as cylinders.
Now it is time to explore the cab. The two yellow seats tilt foward to reveal
a detailed sleeping area. This includes a yellow bed with pillow, TV, walkie
talkie, and a little reading lamp. Up front the detail continues on with a
manual transmission and coffe maker. There is a non-function steering wheel
and lots of controls and dials. The detail continues outside. There are two
storage compartents containing tools (Launch Command tools) a FABULAND shovel
in the rear, and a grey ladder. For accses into to rear cabin, there is a
train door on the left side, and two hinged car-roofs on top. Lot's of chrome
piping in this set, and many little details that make it so great. However,
can those little anteaneas really clean that huge windshield?

Overall:  Forget about this being a must for MODEL TEAM collecters. This is a
must for ALL collectors.

--------------------RATINGS-----------------------
Value*: A
Minimal Simplification: A+
Execution: A+
Minifig and accsesory count: Not applicable
Piece assortment: A+
Themeing**: A+

*-Value is based on the retail price, not price paid.
**-Themeing includes decal desgins, small details, etc.

My views on MODEL TEAM as a theme:
MODEL TEAM is one theme that keeps on giving. Unlike other collections, this
one remains tops in quality and minimal simplification and continues to bring
out some great models. I am not a huge MODEL TEAM fanatic, but this Black Cat
Rig is part of my small collection which also includes the 5553 Red Fury and
5563 Big Foot 4x4. I also have two old MT sets (5510, 5580) which have been
sacrificed for parts.
