You can also use the following techniques for tracking down
part numbers:
1) Look at previously submitted inventories.
2) Install LDraw and all of the official parts releases. Use
makelist to generate a parts catalog.
3) To help you with the whole LDraw thing, install Steve Bliss's
LDAO package and use his catalog generator to create a visual
catalog. Mind you, your catalog is only as good as the part
releases that you installed under LDraw.
I have only inventoried a single set, and I found it to be a
rather laborious task to track down the part numbers for all
the pieces. After giving it some thought, I decided the best
thing to do would be create an application to help out with
this task. I have only just begun to think about what I want
to do. However, I am leaning toward a Windows application
with a spreadsheet into which you can enter the inventory,
edit it, store it, load it, and even mail it directly to
LUGNET. I know this doesn't sound too fancy, but the best
features will be:
1) The application will include a wizard to verify an
inventory.
2) The application will include something (maybe a wizard)
to help you find parts--both visual and fuzzy text search
capabilities. For example, you can tell it that your
looking for the that "1x16 beam" and it will find the
appropriate part number number.
If anyone has any ideas to make this application better, please
let me know.

| There are several ways to find out part numbers. One is a parts reference page at: (URL) Another way is the LDraw parts list, which will at least give you known part numbers and descriptions for elements which have been created for LDraw.
