At first, moving into the charred remains of the haunted Split Spire seemed
like a good idea to the small band of thieves. With an already established
reputation for being home to the spirit of a long-dead necromancer, few people
dare to come near the old place and any with the courage to venture too close
can be easily scared away with minor tricks. But things have turned ugly. With
Cudgel just found dead (his hands clutching at his throat, eyes bulging in
frightened agony), the recent dispute over dividing the booty of yesterdays
heist, and the odd way things keep disappearing, thief has turned on thief.
Now Balor and Simeon circle each other in the dark, damp belly of the tower,
swords drawn, faces taut. There will be at least one more death before the sun
dawns on the Spire. And sinister, spectral eyes gaze on in amusement. . .
The Wolfpack theme was a blink-and-you-miss-it sub-theme for castle in 1992.
Only three sets were released for the theme (though a figure would pop up in the
6105 Medeival Knights figure pack). I myself wasnt overly impressed with the
sub-theme when it originally came out for the fact that there just werent
enough sets and none of them were very large (the Wolfpack Tower just barely
rises to the level of what one might consider a medium size set). Fast
forward a decade or so and my castle interests have me looking back at a set
that does hold some value for a theme that is based on a bunch of rogue/thief
characters and the now long-departed (pardon the pun) ghost figure.
The 6075 Wolfpack Tower is comprised of a small (dual or split) tower
construction. A small ramp leads up to a bridge that spans water (the entire
construction itself is based on a 16x32 blue base plate). The bridge/walkway
then leads to an arched entryway of the first two-tiered tower-half (this is two
levels but the second level doesnt have a landing to speak of). The walkway
then continues down a ramp (theres a place to hide a treasure chest under this
ramp) to the base of the second half of the building. Access for play is given
to the lower level by way of hinged walls on each side of the building that open
out (this is pretty cool). From the lower level a ladder provides access to a
second-level landing. Three torch sconces, a couple of wavy banners and a
Wolfpack flag otherwise adorn the structure.
Three Wolfpack figures come with the set. They all have the same torso print,
and come with two brown cowls/hoods and one black one. There is also a black
and a red mini-cape for the figs (this is a now-discontinued accessory that
isnt missed too much). Weapons for the figs include standard short swords, a
brown spear, a brown poleaxe and a crossbow. The set also comes with a dark
grey falcon/raven figure and the glow-in-the-dark ghost figure (whatever
happened to these?).
After assembling more recent (2009-2010) models, this was a fun, sturdy build.
A Considerable amount of arches and 1x1 and 1x2 bricks went into making up the
castle. To prove the point about a good piece assortment,
pictures with the instructions show some decent alternate model possibilities.
I dont think its unreasonable to consider this a must for serious castle
collectors. Every medieval burg needs a pickpocket thug or two and these guys
fit the bill nicely. If youre not into spending the big bucks just for some
harder-to-find figures but would like some ideas for making some smaller castle
structures for your kingdom, look-up the instructions elsewhere on the web for
some inspiration.
!!! 4x2ReVu Stats !!!
Rating: 6 out of 8 studs
Pros: A nice variation on a small castle assembly, interesting figures and
sub-theme. Walletwise: Originally about $30 for 232 pieces. If youre
looking for the set in June 2010, I can see paying maybe $40-$50 for the set
used and up to $80-$100 for an unopened set. Date: 6/18/2010
