As a certified crane/aerial device inspector and heavy equipment technician
I love Lego technic construction machinery especially the cranes.  When I saw
the previews of 8421 I was excited but assumed I would have to wait ontil S@H
got it in august.  3 weeks ago I saw posts announcing this set had appeared in
Canada TRU  so I started checking local stores almost daily by phone or in
person.  I also kept a close watch on the toysrus.com website and was delighted
when it showed up Monday 6-13-05.  I had it 2-day shipped and got it Thursday,
and assembled it on Friday and Saturday.

This set met all my expectations.  It is my favorite Technic set ever.  8480
was my favorite but it is now in #2 spot.  I love the motorized boom
extension/hoist up and down.  This is a must-have for technic fans, and is the
best Technic set since the 8455 Backhoe IMO.  This is an awesome set for an
aspiring mechanic as they can learn not only about pneumatics, but also gears,
pulleys, and how a 3-section boom operates.  It utilizes an extend cable as well
as a retract cable (strings) which is something I have not seen before in Lego.
Also incorporated is 6-wheel steering which works via a knob on the rear of the
crane.

My only complaint is the chassis, it is shared between both featured models
which seems to be a trend these days.  I like to build from the ground up for
each model.

The set is sorted into numbered bags which makes building easier and
certainly faster for such a large set.

I have not built the alternate cherry-picker yet but it looks like it will be
fun as well.

The set included a nice assortment of studded beams as well as the newer
smooth beams.  Over 1800 pieces in all, and a definate must have for the technic
fan.  I almost thought Technic was dead but this set proves Technic is alive and
well!
