What do people think of the new Designer sets?

New, as in the 2004 additions?  Or the sets from 2003?

Either way my answer is the same... I think they are the best thing to come
along in years!

I think Lego has definitely been listening to what we've asked for.

Either that, or they came to this course on their own accord.  I think these
sets reflect a nice blend of the old Universal Building Sets and the Model Team
series.  And that can't be a bad thing.  :)

I've got
the 4402 Motion Madness (blue speedboat show), 4403 Air Blazers (red
helicopter shown) and 4404 Land Busters (yellow pickup truck shown).

For what it's worth I think the Air Blazers is possibly one of the best sets
we've seen in years.  It works well as a Designer Set and also as a great parts
cache.

These are a not bad alternative to Model Team sets. Don't let the special
decorative pieces fool you - these sets have a *lot* of regular pieces.
E.g. 4403 has 10 2x16 black plate.

Which decorative pieces do you mean?  Just curious.

My favorite is 4403. I was most of the way through building the main model
before I finally realized what the mass of Technic stuff inside was for.
Nicely done!

I had that exact same moment of realization.  I'm building along thinking, "what
is all this gearing supposed to do inside?  I know it doesn't run the landing
gear."  Then I got closer to the end and had that "ah ha!" moment.  It was a lot
of fun to build and show off.

What's also great about the Designer Sets is that they work in both large
versions (like 4403) but also in smaller versions.  The 4096 is my other fav.  I
have suggested this set to parents with kids who like 'trucks and cars' and so
on.  It just makes great little vehicles.

My new fixation is with the X-Pods which I think are an incredibly good addition
to the Designer Sets line.  If these don't sell well, I'm turning in my brick
separator.  ;)

All the best,
Allan B.

(...) I'm thinking of the big curved pieces that have been appearing in the sets lately. For example the four beside the rotor mount on 4403, or the big long piece down the top of the tail. (21 years ago, 29-Mar-04, to lugnet.reviews)
