I am working on a webpage, and I have come up to where I want to use an
image map. In my graphics program help file it talks about Client and
Server side image map processing. It also talks about different NCSA and
CERN CGI programs. From what I understand a Client side processing requires
the browser to interpret the image map (are there browsers still around that
don't do this?). The server side processing uses a script on the server
somewhere. I made a client side image map, and I seemed to have produced
HTML code... of which I cut out the bit I wanted
<IMG SRC="cover_lable.gif" ALT="" USEMAP="#cover_lable"></A>
<MAP NAME="cover_lable">
<AREA SHAPE=RECT COORDS="97,113,286,136" HREF=mailto:linc@bulkley.net
ALT=""></AREA>
</MAP>
and pasted it into the body of the page which I wanted the image to appear.
It seems to work OK, but I have a couple of questions. What files --if
any-- need to be on the server for this piece of code to work? Is there some
way to turn off the colored border (active link) that now is around the
entire image... I want to remove the active link function. I can change the
color to something else, but would rather not have the border at all.
What type of processing is everyone using for image maps? Is there a common
system? I don't have a server picked out, and I move quite a bit, so I am
making the page as portable as possible. What should I go with?
Thanks

| Linc: You should definitely go for client side image maps. (...) Your code looks fine, except for some syntax error and a small detail. - You should make sure you have a text that makes sense for the link in the ALT attribute of the AREA element. I (...)
