I got a cheap web-cam a month or so ago - the only advice that I have is get
proper lighting, the amount of difference lighting makes is amazing. I think
strong daylight would probably be too much (I don't know - there isn't too
much of that in Scotland!), but a light room on a sunny day is the best place
I've found so far - even if it does mean moving your computer!
I also haven't found any good way to capture 'white' objects with my web-cam,
and so I'm starting to avoid them altogether. Your cam might be the same as I
notice the minifig was a bit too bright.

I'd hazard a guess that the guns are reflecting part of the spectrum that we
can't see, but the camera still picks up. If they used a different plastic
that might do it. It might be a side effect of the lighting you are using -
daylight might not make it come out the same way?
