If you're sick of having to log in at www.lego.com each time you visit the
site, here's how to fix that...

The www.lego.com site stores a browser cookie with your "LEGO Web Club" member
information (name & password) when you sign in.  This is cool:  once you're
signed in, you can do stuff without having to give your name & password again
on subsequent pages.  Unfortunately, the cookie it sends is only a temporary
cookie which lasts only as long as your web browser is running.  Once you
shut down or restart your web browser, the cookie is lost.  This is not cool.

So here's how to work around that shortcoming (this is for Netscape 4.x):

*** DISCLAIMER *** FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS AT YOUR OWN RISK ***

Go to Edit/Preferences/Advanced and check the box "Warn me before accepting
a cookie."  Now go to www.lego.com and sign in.  Write down the data that
pops up in the message box...it'll look contain something like this:

   LEGOSESSIONID=MZJWJMMAOWHEMLOJWN02BFoo

(only it'll be different for you).

Now shut down Netscape and go find your cookies.txt file.  Make a backup copy
of cookies.txt before making any changes.  Now open cookies.txt in a text
editor that you *trust*.  (You're on your own here -- if your editor chokes on
or chops or wraps long lines, it's not my fault.)

Now add the following line to cookies.txt:

.lego.com  TRUE  /  FALSE  2147483647  LEGOSESSIONID  MZJWJMMAOWHEMLOJWN02BFoo
                                                      ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
                                                      This will be dependent
                                                      on what you got from
                                                      the message box.

(And make sure that you put TABS where there are spaces shown above; in other
words, make it match the format of the other cookies in the file.)

Now save cookies.txt, restart Netscape.

There you have it.  The cookie is now permanently stored, and won't expire
for about 1.2 billion seconds (in the year 2038).  If you ever want to delete
it, just re-edit cookies.txt in your text editor and delete that line.

Thats pretty interesting, but I have never logged into the Lego site. I didn't know you could! It seems like I have to log into eBay all the time, though, to see other user's email addresses. Is there any way to figure out how to make that cookie (...) (25 years ago, 21-Dec-99, to lugnet.publish)
