I was in the state of Pennsylvania lately and picked up
a free comic book, some interstate thing. But, it had
an interesting idea, a Portage Railway.  Boats on TRAIN
wheels.  You might be able to do the same, with mods here
and there.  Just a thought.

Huntsville & Lake Of Bays Railway, Huntsville, Ontario was a portage railway.
Carried smaller boats, but mustly carried the passengers and cargo.  Currently
undergoing restoration.  Perhaps look for it on the web (don't have a addy)

Other ones, I can think of include: Hay Incline, (Coalbrookdale, UK),  Marine
Railway, Big Chute Ontario (look under Canadian National Parks, it is listed)

The book "The Sentinel, Volume 1" has a account of getting a steamship to one
of the african lakes, and the adventures of doing so.  I doubt you will be able
to get a copy however (limited press run book)

(it involved barges, and hundreds of coolies dragging the engine parts around a
falls...amongst other obsticals)
