| | As alluded to above, the whaleboats are cut down rowboats, in the manner pioneered by Richard Parsons of Port Block fame. I made a jig out of expendable (old grey) bricks secured 3 studs forward of the stern, and carefully cut through with a fine toothed saw. On the first couple I needed to use a craft knife & sandpaper to trim and tidy, but the last two by which time Id figured out it was better to cut from the bottom up rather than the top down a light sand was all that was needed to get them ready for joining. I could have made the whaleboats a little longer, but I was going for the look of a whaleboat, rather than length particularly.

This ship really looks awesome. I also appreciate the very nice
detailing both in the model and its fine descriptions, while preserving the
minifig scale simplicity..

Thanks!

If only you wouldnt spoil the game by cutting an authentic lego piece into
two...
|
Im hoping Lego will see how good a two piece rowboat/whaleboat will be and
follow my lead. ;-)
|
Excellent idea. Two pieces: a stern/bow section and a straight one to allow
different lengths. Just similar to multi part floating boats of the good old
times (no this was even befoe lugnet). It actually looks awesome, too.

Thanks!

This would be the second best thing after reviving the pirates line.
|
Im not sure if would be the second best thing, but yes, it would be pretty
good.
|
But it would be an excellent idea only if TLC had officially released it.
So it is still a blasphemy, besides being anticommunitarian and #17. thing
that we dont want to see here.
|
Cutting is always going to be an emotional issue for some people. It might not
be the #1 thing we want, but it happens. To call it blasphemy is, I think, a
bit of an over reaction. Your mileage may vary, of course.
Thanks for the feedback, and happy building.
Cheers
