Hi William,
I'm working on an Imperial coastal fortress at the moment, so when I finish
you can see what techniques I've used. I've used BURPs, but they are
disguised enough that I think they are unobtrusive. Mine isn't really an
island, but it is surrounded by water on two sides, so it uses the same
ideas as for an island.
I'm trying to think of other islands that have been built in the past, but
none come to mind immediately.

OK, I found one.. Erik Brok created an amazing medieval island a few years
ago. Check out "Estuary Stronghold":

I just tried and the slideshow didn't work, but maybe it will for you.
To make an island pirate specific, I would try to use lots of those rope
rigging pieces, lots of shanty type houses, mish mash of colours, browns,
greys, black, etc. Have fun!
