String for Pirate Ships

I am trying to replace missing string for a couple pirate ships. Thinking
it would be a simple matter to get it from Lego, I filled out a missing
parts form. A week later I received a cordial note from Lego Customer
Service stating that my parts (2 pieces of light string and 1 piece of heavy
string for 6286) were available for a $5.00 surcharge. Needless to say I'm
not willing to pay $5 for three pieces of string.
The light string is very easy to find (I think I'm using black crochet
string). I was wondering whether anyone had managed to find any string or
twine that matched the heavy string that comes with most pirate ships for
rigging the mast and sails. What people have bought and where they got it
would be very useful. Thank you.
