Hi Paul,
I've cleaned a lot of sails and the main thing to avoid is scrubbing them
too hard.  The threads on the edges come loose and fray if you wash them too
long or scrub them too much.  You can use just about any liquid detergent
and even use some bleach if necessary!  Just be sure and rinse them well.
If you have a spot that is hard to remove, then I use a toothbrush and some
spot/stain remover.  It works fairly well!
I iron mine on a medium setting with good results.  You can also use
starch to help stiffen them up a little, but I found that ironing is usually
enough.  If you have a limp sail or wish to make one using other materials,
you can stiffen them using "Aleene's Fabric Stiffener and Draping liquid"!
You can find it in craft and fabric stores.  Mix it half and half with water
and soak the fabric in it.  Hang it up to dry and it will become stiff.  You
will probably have to iron it some after it dries to take out wrinkles.  You
can change the mixture for different levels of stiffness!
If you find, that after washing and ironing, the edges are becoming a
little frayed, you can help the looks by trimming the frayed part with some
very sharp scissors.  You can cut just along the edge and remove the loose
threads without hurting the main body of the sail.  Do it slow and carefully
and the sail will look crisp as new.  I haven't tried using a fray check
liquid to keep the edges intact.  My experience with that type of substance
is that it leaves a residue that you can feel.  You might not see it, but
you can feel that it's there!  I hope you find this information useful.
Good luck in taking care of your sails.

  Washing Pirate Sails?

Does anyone have any recommendations on what to do or NOT do to clean pirate ship sails? I've acquired some used ones from various sources that are really dirty, as well as wrinkled, and I'd like to know how people clean these. Are the colors (...) (24 years ago, 23-Jan-01, to lugnet.pirates)
