Haha!  I love it.

Now, I really am enjoying this entire thread, but my line of thinking is
diverging a little (thus the change in subject line).  A question comes to
my mind about how we refer to ourselves within the "community".  Why do we
need to include the word "adult"?

YES!

Here in the online community and in those clubs connected to it, we tend to
refer to ourselves as Adult Fans of Lego (AFOL), and there are a few younger
members who call themselves Teen Fans of Lego (TFOL), or some variation.
But are these really the correct terms?

The TFOL designation came out of some clubs imposing hard age limits to
become members. Heated debates around that time (mid-2000) inspired teen
LEGO fans to identify separately. I don't like "TFOL." I think "adult" is
based on maturity, and that very much depends on the individual.

[...]
My point is that I don't really like
the use of these terms sometimes.

Yeah, me neither. It's a force of habit for me, though.

In fact, prior to me becoming an active member of r.t.l. and then Lugnet, I
never would have used such terms.  Not once in the previous 25 years did it
ever really occur to me that a distinction had to be made as to what age
group I might be in while hobbying with Lego Toys.

This hits it on the head, IMO.

IMHO, the AFOL term was used just to give this group a sense of identity.
Sure, any old kid can say he plays with Lego, but all he might do is just
buy sets and make them, or just collect Bionicle figures.  We actually take
Lego to the next level and make it an art:  something many kids don't do.

I myself would be classified as a TFOL, a young one at theat, at late 13.  I
found this after researching for 'old Lego' on Google, because I was so
enthralled at the peeks of old Space in my catalogs.   When I found this
site, I was bowled over by the quality of the stuff made here.  Realistic
spaceships, working clocks and harpsicords...

I guess it was time to start building in color.  :)

Lugnet inspired me to learn HTML, and now even more into PHP so I could make
a cool Lego site. I saved all my money for 4 months to buy a web server.

(I'm making a new site at http://creations.jhkruer.com but it only has the
home page made so far!  :)  )

I consider myself as an AFOL.  Even if I am not old enough, my actions are
similar to what you guys do, and not to any kid.

Wow.  Thanks guys!

(...) Yep. (...) True. I think it's great to encourage those kids who don't build LEGO on this level to explore it. I have gained a new appreciation for Bionicle recently, at BricksWest and at a friend's house a couple weeks ago. His kids have a lot (...) (...) YES! Man I'm really not getting work done today. Stopped by the post office with my taxes, visited a local shopkeeper. Posting in this silly thread. Well, the thread isn't silly, but it's silly that I'm not getting my work done! (...) The TFOL (...) (22 years ago, 15-Apr-03, to lugnet.general, lugnet.people, lugnet.fun.community)
