I don't agree with you there! At least if by 'the medium' you only mean
real, physical bricks.
I haven't got much opportunity to build with real Lego, except for playing
with the kids, but I do build for myself with virtual bricks (*and* build
programs for it...).
One could admire the works of others, collect pictures, have opinions,
discuss, etc. etc. without ever touching a real Lego brick. That's still
'part of the community', IMO.
What 'the Lego community' excludes, are all the people working/playing by
themselves, not knowing about (or needing, or wanting) any others to share
the experience with. You can't be part of a community by being alone.
