custom electric parts?

Has anyone seen instructions, schematics, plans, rough sketches on
napkins, etc. for custom electric LEGO parts?

LEGO seems to be getting out of the electronics business, which is a
shame IMHO.  The available selection is quite limited (and pricey too).
So I'd like to learn how to make my own lights, power adapters,
switches, logic gates, buzzers, and simple sensors.  (One shouldn't have
to buy a Mindstorms kit to make a simple LEGO burglar alarm!)  But it's
been a long while since I played with electronics much, and so I'd like
to start by walking in the footsteps of others.

(I'm posting this to both groups because I imagine that in most cases,
such parts would be made by mutilating normal bricks, but would add on
quite a bit of custom hardware.)

Thanks,
- Joe

(...) The only thing I've done is to add LEDs. Cutting a 9v jumper came first. But I can't aford to do that to often. Either way, I'd love to see more of this as well. Mat (20 years ago, 12-Aug-04, to lugnet.parts.mod, lugnet.parts.custom)

(...) One doesn't. All one needs to do is prop a bucket full of bricks on top of one's door. The burgler provides all of the loud sound effects gratis (well, you hope it's gratis...). ;P (20 years ago, 13-Aug-04, to lugnet.parts.mod, lugnet.parts.custom, lugnet.off-topic.fun)
