Thanks :-) I thought of calling a half double axle joiner a "minim" because it
looks like the musical note and it's a lot quicker to say!
I've made quite a few of the X plugs you mentioned, but from axle pins because
the ball parts are less common. I've used them:
in this signal gantry: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1102056
(4 you can see on the bell cranks for the right signal and another 2 at the
bottom hold the flex ends to the levers)
in these steam engines: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1093550
(on the right, axles facing)
and http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1093563
They are so useful I've made at least 50, but they might not be practical for
the general market because kids would get them stuck in other pieces and
wouldn't be able to remove them. This makes the short pins different from other
parts we mod because the main reason TLG couldn't make most of the others is
that there are too many big useless parts taking up the moulds (500000DKR each).
Never mind, we AFOLs can make enough short pins for our needs from the amount we
buy!
I think the fact that the chance of a certain piece being made by TLG is zero
for a good reason other than mould numbers can hinder the acceptance of the
piece in the AFOL community. The short X-pin was my first mod, and it's a great
way to start modding because it can be made on a 4000rpm motor lathe (LEGO tools
too!), so the barrier to making this piece hinders other AFOLs from taking the
plunge.
The 1L friction pin with bezel (the O-plug you mentioned), from a pin ball part
or black peg, is one I've not needed to make yet because the mods I usually make
are for moving mechanisms in small spaces, which don't often require friction
pins. The lack of movement from friction pins also means there is usually more
space to hide the other half of the pin if it doesn't have any clearance issues
with other moving parts.
Despite the variety, I still try not to mod more than necessary :-) The 3 areas
I mod most for are currently moving technic parts, shorter tiles and baseplates.
Sadly I couldn't make longer thin liftarms (9,11,13,15) unless I sacrificed my
no-glue policy.
I have been compiling a parts list, sketching the ideas in Visio, but I would
have to trim it to only those parts I thought of independently if I were to post
it. There are at least 60 parts on the list.
