| (...) I suspect that the new smaller prints are less susceptible to printing errors. The more space around the letter the less tiles will have the writing snipped at the edge so you waste less of them. Tim (19 years ago, 24-Apr-06, to lugnet.parts)

I've been able to find only one functional difference (improvement) you can clearly see here : (URL) That square limit how deep, Technic bushes for instance, can be "studded"; preventing it also to be "angled".
