Looks red to me, also.  Then again, the 10072 Beams set is always shown in
catalog photos with black 44374 tri-beams, but Peeron lists them as the same
PearlLtGray color that they originally made them in for the Gigamesh Spybot.
I'd guess offhand that they originally intended to release it in red, but that
they switched the color after the catalog photo was taken.  Oddly, Peeron lists
set 5008 as coming with a dark-grey separator, but Bricklink lists it as a
light-grey one.

So I'm hoping someone can confirm whether or not this tool ever existed in
red. If it did, I'd love to get one someday.

So would I.  It'd be really easy to locate at most MichLUG shows, since the
Castle layouts tend to be mixes of greys, green and blue; and the Space layouts
tend to be mixes of greys and blue.  There aren't a lot of red MOCs except in
the MichLTC Train layouts, and even then the bulk of the display is in greys,
green, tan, and various "earth" colors.
