Today's SMART meeting, held at the Seattle Center as part of Robothon was a
great success. We had a BrickHeap Wars competition, and five teams participated.
The teams, and their results were:

Red Team (Mark & Cathy Williams) "Peninsula Power Robotics"
first run:  11 points
second run: 42 points

Dark Grey Team (Gus Jansson) "Semi-SMART"
first run:  23 points
second run: 23 points

Blue Team (Mark Kenworthy) "Robos"
first run:   1 point
second run:  1 point

Black Team (Doug Bell) "Just Barely"
first run:   1 point
second run: 13 points

Yellow Team (Shane Brinkman-Davis) "SideLift"
first run:   6 points
second run: 43 points

The competition was to load a truck with crates. In the end, Shane's team won;
essentially he had a team all to himself. Because of construction and very bad
traffic, he came to the event late, (another strike against him!) and so
everyone had already split into teams and started building. Over the course of
the next three hours, several people occasionally came and helped or distracted
him, but his solution was as simple as you could get, and it managed to win by a
single point (a bonus point because his robot wasn't in the truck at the end of
the run).

Gus' team used an NXT, and had the most sophisticated programming (and also
close to the simplest mechanics). Their robot managed to get an equivalent of 83
points in the run after their last official run, so if they'd only had a few
more minutes to tweak their robot sooner, they'd have won. But on the runs that
counted, their robot only got two crates into the truck.

The Red Team, lead by Mark and Cathy Williams, was the only team that did not
not come from the SMART club. Their robot was quite interesting, and they nearly
tied for first place, only their robot got stuck in the truck at the end of its
run. Thanks for coming!

Doug's team had a very sophisticated lift that would pick up the crates, but had
some troubles with navigation, and so, unfortunately, didn't manage to get more
than a single crate into the truck.

Finally, the Blue Team. They managed to get a bonus point for not ending up in
the truck at the end. Mark helped organize this event, and so everyone though
he'd have a tremendous advantage, having known what the robot needed to do for
weeks already. But that turned out, perhaps, to have been a disadvantage! His
team built a wonderful forklift, and theoretically might have been the only
robot to completely load the truck. But sadly, they couldn't get it to navigate
the tight spaces in the warehouse part of the arena.

Scoring: there were two types of crates, white and blue. Each crate completely
in the truck was worth 10 points, and all blue crates that were loaded 'first',
were worth an extra 2 bonus points. (The justification being that they were
intended for a 'further' destination, and so wouldn't have to be unloaded at the
first stop). Another bonus point was given if the robot was completely out of
the truck at the end of its run. Finally, since no team felt ready to compete
after building and programming for three hours, I offered an incentive of 5
bonus points for volunteering to go first. Shane jumped at the opportunity, put
his robot in the warehouse, pushed the 'run' button, and his robot did
absolutely nothing. So 5 points for going first, plus a bonus point for not
being in the truck at the end of the run helped his robot to not come dead-last
in the first run.

I hope everyone had fun. Congratulations to all the participants! All your
robots were excellent, and it was a blast to watch. Many people attending
Robothon came to watch the robots at the end. I think everyone was impressed!
