Happy New Year everyone!

This next meeting, on January 29th, is going to be SMART's 4th anniversary!

Here are the details about the mini-challenge that we're having: The idea is to
build a stationairy robot that can shoot some sort of Lego projectile at a light
target. The light will be a 60 watt light bulb, and will be randomly placed
somewhere behind a 4-foot square sheet of plexiglass. Your robot needs to locate
the lightbulb, both horizontally and vertically (since the light can be at any
height as well as any position) and shoot three projectiles at it. Between shots
you may reload your projectile if needed and you are allowed to give your robot
a single 'bit' of information. Examples of this are a button press of a touch
sensor, or a message sent with a remote control, but turning a dial or adjusting
a slider isn't allowed. The purpose of this bit of information is to tell your
robot how close it came to the target so that the next shot will be better. Of
course if your robot doesn't need this info, all the better!

After the robot's three attempts at hitting a bulls eye, we'll move the light
target to a second location, and let the robot try again.

Remember, if the light target is not directly in front of the robot, the
distance will be more than five feet, meaning you'll have to shoot faster, or
aim higher. For a simpler challenge, you can assume that the light *will* be
directly in front of you. For a harder challenge, instead of a 4x4 foot area
that can contain the target, get your robot to work on a 4x8 foot area. Or build
an automatic, reloading robot, especially one that can hold more than just three
or four rounds at a time.

Here's a sample idea of what the arena might be like:

Have fun! But be safe. Make sure your projectiles don't hit people!

Hope to see everyone there!

Here's the two-week reminder before the SMART meeting which will be at 2pm at Digipen on January 29th. Read the previous post for details on the mini-challenge. I'm thinking of just enclosing the light-bulb in a small plexiglass box instead of using (...) (19 years ago, 17-Jan-05, to lugnet.org.us.smart)
