I was working a bit on my Figure-8 racer tonight when I remembered that I
had to rebuild it to make the RCX face forward. That prompted me to review
the building and programming rules that have been decided on to make this
race work.

The initial set of rules can be found here
http://news.lugnet.com/org/us/smart/?n=142

Some important bits to remember, as well as a few hints:
- the RCX must face forward
- broadcast your ID number every time you decide to enter the grey
intersection, don't broadcast anything else or any other time (ask for an id
if you don't have one yet)
- use program 1 as your racing program (this allows a remote control to
start all racers at once)
- you won't know whether the race is going to initially go clockwise or
counterclockwise, so either have some sort of mechanical or programming
switch if you need to let your robot know which way to start (hint: if you
use program 5 to toggle the 'first' variable each time you run it,
displaying the new value for a second or two, program 1 can access this
variable and use it to know what direction to go)
- it is recommended that you pre-calibrate the light sensor readings for
the track so that your robot doesn't have to find out what white, black and
grey look like after the race has started
- the race is to run for 10 laps, so make sure you count entering the
intersection 20 times before stopping your car!
- custom sensors are okay, but should have negligable computing power

If you'd like to see what the track looks like, see these pictures:

(Note, both racers in the above pictures have the RCX facing the wrong
direction!)
