Eh, sort of. MichLTC, which is part of MichLUG (even though MichLTC is older), focuses specifically on Train, Town, and other related modern minifig-scale themes (I know at least one member builds a lot of military stuff). MichLUG has a more general focus on, well, everything else. Mostly Space, Castle, and Pirate, but I’ve been introducing some BIONICLE stuff into the mix.

This is confusing to me, but I am not close to the group. If I remember correctly, when I searched for LEGO robotics groups in Michigan 3 years ago and I found MichLUG as a LEGo group, I was excited and disapointed all at once. The lack of MindStorms as a theme for your group was a contributing factor to my decision to start my own group.

MichLUG was formed in October of 2000. A bunch of us got together in DeWitt Michigan, showed off some creations, talked about S@H, buying parts online, searching for various deals at stores, etc. Creations were pretty varied in theme, there were space stuff, town buildings, a pirate ship and even a technic car. We had two more meetings that year and then in January of 2001 there was an opportunity to do a town/train layout at the Great American Train Show in Novi. I’m not sure if we called ourselves a LTC at this show or whether that came later, but (IIRC) the LTC moniker just sort of happened. John Neal made us a super neat Logo, which got up on the website and not too long after that we got some shirts made because we thought we would look sharp at shows with club shirts.

Meetings have always had a strong non-train presence and in the begin our shows were pretty split between train / non-train events. It wasn’t until the end of 2002 that we had a real long run on train events in a row.

While I’m bummed that you never came to a MichLUG meeting to show us how cool Mindstorms could be, the fact you went and created a new group is awesome. I know that it can be a lot of work and effort.

(...) Another good reason, I agree. (...) I think the lack of theme crossover is another big reason we haven't gotten together in the past. Looking forward, I can imagine a "show" which has some of our robots wandering around one of your layouts, or (...) (21 years ago, 27-Mar-04, to lugnet.org.us.lrgoaa, lugnet.org.us.michlug, FTX)
