The fact that there are at least 1/3rd of our members who dont live in the
greater Detroit area probably doesnt help a lot with that.

Another good reason, I agree.

Not at all. We have no reason to resent another Michigan based LEGO club,
but theres not really any theme crossover between our two clubs, so it makes
more sense for us to concentrate on cooperative events with other neighboring
LUGs and LTCs.

I think the lack of theme crossover is another big reason we havent gotten
together in the past. Looking forward, I can imagine a show which has some of
our robots wandering around one of your layouts, or something similar.

Eh, sort of. MichLTC, which is part of MichLUG (even though MichLTC is
older), focuses specifically on Train, Town, and other related modern
minifig-scale themes (I know at least one member builds a lot of military
stuff). MichLUG has a more general focus on, well, everything else. Mostly
Space, Castle, and Pirate, but Ive been introducing some BIONICLE stuff into
the mix.

This is confusing to me, but I am not close to the group. If I remember
correctly, when I searched for LEGO robotics groups in Michigan 3 years ago and
I found MichLUG as a LEGo group, I was excited and disapointed all at once. The
lack of MindStorms as a theme for your group was a contributing factor to my
decision to start my own group.

Shows are certainly a big focus, as are charity events (like Festival of
Trees last year). Meetings are primarily geared towards getting upcoming
shows organized and discussing shows that happened recently, but we also
bring MOCs to show to each other, sets to draft, and (occassionally)
LEGO-based games (like BrickQuest and Evil Stevies Pirate Game).
Have you guys ever considered doing a show before? I doubt the public has
any real idea of whats possible with LEGO-based robotics, and Im sure
theyd be impressed.

Our monthly meetings are held in a busy, Main St. coffee shop with tons of
passersby. We always draw attention from the other patrons and often get good
questions from interested parties. Our events tend to be held in a members
house because they are not usually large enough to justify the cost involved in
holding them in a public venue. We had great success with Sumo-bot 5 this past
September though. This was by far the largest event we have held and it was in a
public location drawing participants from Indianna and Wisconsin.
There is a local professional group of software engineers who have invited us to
stage an event as part of one of their meetings too. There is definately public
interest in MindStorms and robotics in general.

A bunch of us got together in DeWitt Michigan, showed off some creations, talked about S@H, buying parts online, searching for various deals at stores, etc. Creations were pretty varied in theme, there (...)
