Technically a K8 (no hyphen) is a box size designation. It says K8 on the
outside of the box (just like some LD boxes say Dim 24 or whatever) I saw a
K8 last nite that had sets in it, it was an interstore transfer. No parts in
it at all.
But since, for whatever reason, LEGO has seen fit to *always* (??) ship play
area replenishment parts in K8 sized (and marked) boxes, AFOL slang usage
means as Scott said... play area replenishment parts. These can be overruns
of a specific part, odd parts from some storage area, parts that have mixed
colors due to molding problems or whatever.
I have also seen K7 and K9 sized boxes, IIRC.
That was more trivia than you probably were looking for. :-)
