Wow, that Lego train layout rocks!

I would have loved to see all this great stuff in real life. After an hour of
surfing through all the GATS pictures I'm really impressed.

My favorites have been the shell fuel station and the new roundhouse with
turntable.

You'll be seeing those again, as both of them were built modularly. I know
I've raved about the turntable before but one thing to realise is that the
entire turntable from the top of the rails to the baseplates it rides on is
just over 3 bricks high. Steve did some pretty clever engineering to fit it
into such a shallow depth.

It moves very smoothly too. Steve had magnets mounted at the track positions
to cause the turntable to want to be centered correctly as it got close but
that had the effect of introducing jerkiness, so he pulled them.

Most other turntables I've seen are a bit deeper than that.

(...) I did it in the same height, but I have to agree that Steve has done a better Job, since the turntable of mine was not working in the 3-height version. For the X-mas event I had done a change to a hand powered intermediums version (the (...) (23 years ago, 23-Jul-01, to lugnet.org.us.michlug)
