Yes. The train motor is just another 9v motor, much like the one with the
Mindstorms kit.

No. The reason for doing that (using the electrical plate) is if you are running
big trains that put a large load on the RCX, or several trains.

Yes. It's just "normal" robot programming. The first train was pretty simple, and
used all the I/O for a single RCX.
Sensors:
1) Touch sensor to detect train at loading station
2) Touch sensor at unloading station
3) Touch sensor/limit switch for unloading arm at unloading station
A) Motor to run loading station
B) Motor to lower/raise unloading arm
C) Output to drive train
