MUGS have now had a few "partsies" meetings, and we prefer to go with the
"unstructured" approach, although at the last one I think we had about 6
participants, which is pretty close to the maximum safe level I think.
In ours, you don't all have to bring the same set - you just bring what you've
been able to get on sale. Generally, it's good to have sets in multiples of 2,
but not required.
We just open one bag at a time (or all "like" bags if parting out multiples) and
everyone makes a grab for the bits they want. Of course, some more desirable
bits may require negotiation, but usually it works out OK.
Then, when the entire set (or sets) has been parted out, everyone looks at how
much they have, and works out a price based on the relative amounts, and the
total cost of the sets. Other factors like rare or large parts may occasionally
affect the prices, but basically it's just an agreed price for each person's lot
between all participants.
Oh, and the "seller" always has "dibs" on any parts they want, as this is often
the reason they bought the sets in the first place.
It's worked great so far, and no doubt we'll have more. As I said 6 participants
is probably the most you'd want for this to work.
Hope this helps

It's sort of like Secret Santa: everybody brings the same set, all the sets' pieces are sorted into piles of identical pieces. Then everybody takes turns taking pieces. Are (...)
