Tony & All,

I’m curious if anyone has used mindstorms in train shows. If no one has then
is it possible? In Michlug we had small problems with the controlling of
trains. We would have a large loop for our trains but we had three
controllers. We had to turn off all three dials to stop the train. Luckily
we had a power kill switch when a train derailed. We had more than one loop
that means more controllers. Dose anyone have suggestions on these problems.
We got second place in the show so I was wondering if that was because we
didn’t have control of our trains.

I am sure we did not get second place because we did not have ocntrol of our
trains.

I’m not sure it might be because we used
“Lego” trains. Ideas please.

I think that's part of it. That and it may have been a bit rough around the
edges.

I think we should be happy we got a place at all, much less second place.

Yes. But winning higher places means more money for the club to use to
support activities. Not a huge factor but one worthy of consideration.

Well those two reasons are all I could think of. I don't know what we could
of done better. Have smoke come out of the engines? Not enough box cars? As
far as I was concerned our display was the best there. I’m not sure why we
didn’t get first. It doesn’t really matter to me I just had fun building. I
enjoy making big displays and I also like to make things better. I just
think it would be cool if we had more control of our trains. That’s why I’m
asking the minstorm question. I could care less for first place. I’m
interested in making our display more impressive. I have Ideas on how to
switch rails and detach cars with micro motors, but it would be easier if we
didn’t have 12 controllers sitting around the whole display. I’m going to
bring my ideas to the next meeting. To finish my idea I thought about asking
if we could incorporate minstorms into it. I’m not sure because I’ve never
used minstorms. It’s just another one of my ideas ;)

The reason for multiple controllers is to deliver power to all sections of a
large layout. If you go non LEGO with power distribution to many places on
the track, you can get away with one controller. If you want to go
mindstorms as a primary train control mechanism you will have to do that too.

However you can use mindstorms to do things like automate accessories,
unloading things, etc. no problem.

Still, your idea is a good one, in part because it does not involve pancakes.

(...) Pancakes good idea! I’ll ponder on that one for a while. Use minstorms to make a mechanism to flip pancakes. Cool I wouldn’t need you to make them for me. Oh one to squeeze orange juice and one to make eggs! Yes! I’ll be working on this one (...) (23 years ago, 25-May-01, to lugnet.org.us)
