I think that's part of it. That and it may have been a bit rough around the
edges.

Yes. But winning higher places means more money for the club to use to
support activities. Not a huge factor but one worthy of consideration.

The reason for multiple controllers is to deliver power to all sections of a
large layout. If you go non LEGO with power distribution to many places on
the track, you can get away with one controller. If you want to go
mindstorms as a primary train control mechanism you will have to do that too.
However you can use mindstorms to do things like automate accessories,
unloading things, etc. no problem.
Still, your idea is a good one, in part because it does not involve pancakes.
