I did the math before, and $5 S@H is about $16 of actual Canadian money. • Would
that still be a good buy?

Huh? US $5.00 / 0.65 => about Cdn $7.70 . Add GST => 8.24 . Where does
the rest come from?

Two places--

Shipping- $4.50 US

Taxes are added before conversion rate.  And Ontario taxes are bad enough as
they are- with S@H, it's about 21 cents per dollar.

Shipping is $6.xx for shipping. Don't forget to add an extra $2 for duty or
whatever it was...
That's $9 bucks CDN for shipping. I figure that when S@H moved to the US our
prices for S@H stuff jumped about 26%.

I used to order MANY things from S@H, now I consolidate my purchases though
friends and whatnot. I'm hoping S@H's trucks to Canada won't be full and they
will waste money and smarten up and not charge us Canadians though the nose...

Sorry for including the entire history above, but I thought it was needed.

I made my first big train order to S@H not long ago. I don't quite see
how it all worked out, but here are the numbers:

Total for goods, in US funds: 303.88
    (4565 + 2x4531 + 3x4515 + 4553 + 2x5304 + 5302 + 5303)
Total for order, given over the phone: 307.20
(also shown on my credit card statement)
Amount in Cdn $ charged to my card: 468.87

That's a conversion rate of about 0.655, which is pretty close to the
value reported on the nightly financial news.

So, amortize the extras by making a few large purchases rather than a
whole lot of small purchases, and the added bits pretty well disappear.
There are *no* duties on toys. I see *no* GST in the above (a mistake
by Lego, or are they swallowing it?), and since I live in Alberta, there
are no provincial taxes. Also, the order was > $75.00, so I got a free
Spy Runner.

All in all, I'm quite happy with S@H service to Canada. The parcel arrived
in under 2 weeks.

Don't design inefficiency in - it'll happen in the implementation.

(...) If you were to pay by cheque you'd only pay .43x % in exchange... (...) You do pay GST and the $2.00 charge for brokerage/duty (That's what they call it). Check your bill. (...) You purchased almost $500 CAN. I doubt you would be doing that (...) (24 years ago, 1-Nov-00, to lugnet.reviews, lugnet.org.ca.vlc, lugnet.robotics.vc)
