I suppose if Iain gets to post links to cool mechanical videos, I get to too:

This is the Steadicam Operators of America's yearly workshop demoreel, where
for a full week, you get to learn how to operate a Steadicam camera
stabilization system, then make scads of money flying Steadicams for fun and
profit.

The Steadicam you might have never seen if you haven't been on a set, but
you've defintely seen the results of Steadicam shots--the famous Rocky scene
where Sylvester Stallone runs up the stairs of the Philadelphia Art Museum
was actually shot by Steadicam inventor, Garrett Brown.  Now it's used in
almost every television drama (ER, especially) and modern movie.

There's several models, ranging from $9K USD to $66K USD, the SK2 to the
Ultra, but they're all based on isolating body motion from the camera using
an isoelastic "arm".  The camera sits on a "sled" which balances out its
mass with extra weights (preview monitor, batteries) on the bottom with a
gimbal that's attached to the arm.  The neat thing about the arm, is that
while it's springloaded, it doesn't bounce up, it gradually rises up if you
guide it.  (it is also frickin dangerous and will cut or crush your finger
if you leave it near the "bones" of the arm.  I tried one at SMPTE97.)

In the video, you see Steadicams being flown with Hi8 and DV camcorders in
place of a 16 or 35mm camera, probably for ease of use for training.
There's also balancers, car mounts, and this weird aerial mount thing also
invented by Garrett Brown.

Calum

PS-Before anyone asks, the song is called "Who Told You" by Philadelphia
indie band, Hurdi Gurdi.

(...) Funny how they're now introducing techniques to put the motion *back in* to the scenes in several shows. NYPD blue was the first i saw to do this, and it *really* annoys me. ROSCO (22 years ago, 25-Mar-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
