Well, you still need that.

no "www"

Listen, sonny, back in the day, machines had node names, because they were
expensive boxen like Suns, not some generic made down the street boxes
attached to some wussy residential network that doled out temporary DHCP
addresses.  No, machines had NAMES, not www. DNS aliases.

peach.mie.
who names a computer peach?

The kind of person who has 20-30 workstations in his research group and 300+
other machines on the department LAN.  Healthcare down the hall has them
named after medical functions (intubate.mie, gauze.mie, stitch.mie),
Cognitive Engineering has them named after guitarists (knopfler.mie etc),
and Enterprise Integration had them as cities (quebec.mie, rome.mie).

It's an easy way to figure out who in the department has a certain machine.
So ours are fruits and vegetables.

utoronto.ca

ok, part of U to T thanks to the host....  then remember .ca.. who the
heck uses .ca???

Oh, universities, governments, crown corporations, media outlets like
newspapers, TV networks...just to name a few

/events/lego/
events... lego, that is a LOT to remember.... after threatening Calum to

Yeah, I'll agree, it's a long name.

So, IT is official, now if you stop someone on the street and feel they
need to know about our GREAT web space just tell them to go to

http://www.rtltoronto.org

don't worry, same great sight, less filling, and the DNS host we use
redirects to the proper peach server.

I guess someone has to tell the nice people who maintain the link at
lugnet about the change.

No, I'd rather they keep it directed to peach for now directly, but
regardless, the new DNS name is a good idea.

Calum

OK, I asked Calum to post this but..... Before last night, If you ever wanted to tell people about our little group, and felt they might want to see the official RTLToronto web page you had to remember this ungainly address. (URL) "www" peach.mie. (...) (22 years ago, 28-Oct-02, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
