At a model engineer show in the US called "NAMES" they give out
tokens, I think 5, to everyone that enters.

The tokens are used by people to vote on the best models.

Does this idea help in any way?

So is the competition to find the best capitalist or the best robot
designer? This is not a rhetorical question, I'd like to hear what
people think.

BOTH!!

So, it's best capitalist AND robot designer?

It seems like using money as the ONLY criteria to decide the winner will
really only determine the best capitalist, not the best robot
designer.  For example, if there are two machines that are very similar,
the winner will likely be the 'more capitalist' design, not the better
mechanical design.  Especially, if 'voting' is done by the general
public.  IF the only votes come from fellow builders, then some weight
will be give to the machine itself.  But others may say, "This one gives
me 2 M&Ms for a penny, while the cool one only gives me 1 M&M for a
penny.  I'll take 2 M&Ms."

Also, this may actually discourage some types of machines.  Like a Pepsi
(can) machine.  I doubt anyone would even attempt that, because there's no
way it could win.  But that would be REALLY cool to see.

And the slot machine...  I doubt anyone would 'play' with the intent of
winning money.  (they'd still want to play)  But if it didn't pay out,
well, it would kind of suck as a machine.  So what happens with that
money?  Can the player keep the money, if they want?  (rhetorical question)

To me (IMHO) it seems like there's a lot more that could be done, if the
device is not limited by trying to make money.

But that's just my  0.02$US (which, of course is worth more...)
