It's defintely a Mindstorms wheel, part 2903. It was chosen because
everyone has at least four of them when buying the Mindstorms RIS package.
Usually when a game object is chosen for rtlToronto, we make it either
something that's included in the RIS package, or something that's so basic
that anyone can build it (namely the rtl6/rtl10 blocks). That's why none of
the competitions have featured things like intelligent pucks or anything IR
based, though it's certainly been tried (Jin Sato brought intelligent pucks
to rtl5 which had an onboard PIC that transmitted RCX messages).
The ZNAP wheels are not the same at all. IIRC all the ZNAP sets have these
rigid propeller wheels with no tire, there's a large one and a smaller one.
That all said, it's unlikely we'll do another Live event. There is simply
too much work to do to get one rolling, and there's a lot of hardware
infrastructure to go along with it--the playfield skirt wall, the USB hub,
all those controllers, all the cabling and splitters, IR towers, batteries
etc. A real pain. I think everyone had a pile of fun, it was a cute event,
but I'm eager to go back to full scale rtlToronto stuff.
