What to the RTLToronto think this means to them?

That's just over 5 months to obsolescence.  At that point the
(limited) supply of retail new stuff will be gone and only resale and
educational will remain available.

Opinions?

Okay, here's where I think we're going with this one.  (I haven't really said
anything about NXT so far, partially because it's an unreleased product.)

First, the NXT doesn't hit retail until August 2006, so the five months to
obsolescence issue is moot.  It's also not obsolete: It's not like suddenly
there will be no more AA batteries to keep those RCXes running or they all turn
to dust.  There's plenty of equipment already in the group to keep those units
running.  So I don't see making a call until at least September 2006.

Second, I don't see enough people rushing out to buy them the first day.    I
know some people are rip roaring and ready to go on buying one or preordering,
like those weirdos who stood in line in a freezing parking lot at 4AM to buy an
Xbox360 or whatever.  But I just can't envision enough of a critical mass of
them by the end of the summer.

Based on the specs so far, the NXT seems to be quite a bit more powerful in
capabilities than the existing RCX, and seems to abstract a good deal of that
power to the end user, so I think it would be really unfair to put them side by
side with the RCX.

So what I think we'll do is revisit this issue probably around January of 2007,
when enough people in this group have them and have had a chance to figure out
what they can do.  From there, we'll have to make a decision about events going
forward.

To put this in perspective, rtl20, rtl21, rtl22 will be RCX only.  That's only
three events forward.  Or in another way, give us a few months after the product
actually SHIPS before we have to start changing things around.

Calum

From the NXT FAQ: (URL) for the long URL) "How long will you support the old system? (extra sensors for sale, etc) The RIS and the sensors will be deleted from our assortment from 1st June 2006. LEGO Education will keep supporting the RCX platform (...) (19 years ago, 10-Jan-06, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
