leave it to DARPA (the us military research arm) to sponsor a million
dollar (glorified) line following contest.

Dude, given that there are no lines, its GPS waypoints, and it's extremely rough
terrain (the most likely failure point is vehicles tipping over from not seeing
ditches at the 20 MPH average speed they will need to be doing in order to
complete the course in daylight)

Lar,

This challenge is too easy for the rtl guys to even attempt.  To really make it
tough, the robots should be required to travel over 200 miles in just 10 hours,
through unknown conditions which include mountains, streams, and the occasional
wildlife reservation, over generally bad roads, using only satellites for
navigation, while carrying a tray of black marbles.  (the white ones should be
discarded)

Oh, and the robot should be made completely out of LEGO blocks.

Otherwise, it's just too easy.

calling it glorified line following is like ...
well, it's like calling your sense of humor only SLIGHTLY warped

good one.

But to truly make it difficult, forget about the natural hazards... said robot must be able to successfully cross a room filled with 5-year-olds and AFOL'ers who have been unable to touch the brick in 6 months.
