"Rendezvous with Rama" as Clarke's best work.
Agreed.  I read this in one night when I was 15.  Couldn't put the dang book
down.
It's good. I still need to read 2001 some time, though, to compare.

2001 is more "Let's find out what God is saying" and less "Let's figure out
how to survive this mess".  I found it to be less enjoyable than _Rama_, but
more profound.

Niven solo, I'm goig to have to go with Known Space, if that's
allowed, or _Ringworld_ if it isn't.

I personally love his Beowulf Schaeffer stories.  Actually, most of his shorts
from ~20 years ago or so were good.

Ray Bradbury: _Martian Chronicles_, or possibly _Illustrated Man_ (another
collection).
I'm gonna have to disagree with you, and say nominate Fahrenheit 451.
It's got everything a book needs.

Paper.  Words.  What else is there?  ;-)

I forgot all about _451_.  Good book.  Insidious backstory.  I guess part of
the reason it's better is that it really hits home for folks who read and
write.  But the events in _Chronicles_ relate better to human nature, IMO.

Cheers,

(...) The post-nuclear-war smart-house story near the end is wonderful. (25 years ago, 17-Dec-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

All of the sequels sucked. (...) _Heorot_ was a great book. Up there (...) (25 years ago, 17-Dec-99, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)
