The cost depends to some extent on which TLD you're registering in (.com, .net,
.org, etc.).  My domain is registered with DynDNS (www.dyndns.com).  Their
prices are pretty typical.  They charge from $15/year to $52/year for a domain
name.  .net, .com, and .org are $15/year.  Their price chart is at
https://www.dyndns.com/services/pricing/index.html#domains.

A domain registration lasts as long as you pay for it to last.  DynDNS allows to
register for one, two, or five years at a time.

I've been pretty pleased with DynDNS.  I started using them for their free
dynamic hostname resolution service since I have a DSL connection and a dynamic
IP address.  When I decided to get a domain name I went with them mainly because
their DNS servers are integrated with their dynaimc IP service, so when your IP
changes your domain mapping changes at the same time.  I also like that they
stay out of your way.  They don't send you spam trying to get you to buy other
services with them.  The only mail I get from them is domain renewal notices and
the _very_ occasional outage notification (haven't had one in at least three
years), and that's just the way I like it.

They also offer other services that you might consider when getting your own
domain.  For example, I have mail delivered to my domain.  Since it is only a
DSL connection it isn't as reliable as something with a service level agreement,
so I also get backup MX service through DynDNS.  That allows my mail server to
drop off the net for up to ten days and they'll queue incoming mail for me until
I get back online.

I did some basic Googling, but I figured that it would be safer to ask actual people: What does a domain name cost? How long does registration last? Can you recommend a reliable, trustable host for a domain? These and other questions occupy my (...) (19 years ago, 30-Jan-06, to lugnet.general)
