web-based cancel to be implemented...

Hey thanks ROSCO,

I couldn't get it to work with IE or Mozilla.  (User Interface issues,
I guess).  So I was forced to use the ultra-modern telnet news client.
So for web posters, here's howto cancel your own lugnet post via telnet.
First visit the message on the web and jot down the URL.  eg.

  http://news.lugnet.com/off-topic/test/?n=1234567

It contains the newsgroup name and article number which you'll need.
Then connect to lugnet NNTP via telnet and find your way to the article.
Print it out and verify it's the right one.  Then print out the header.

  telnet lugnet.com 1119
  group lugnet.off-topic.test
  article 1234567
  head

Grab the important stuff and paste it into a text editor.  I suspect you
might really only need the From and X-Real-Life-Name sections.  I grabbed
this and added the word cancel inside the <> of Message-ID:

  Newsgroups: lugnet.off-topic.test
  Path: lugnet.com!lugnet
  From: "My Name" <myself@my.email.adress>
  X-Real-Life-Name: My Name
  Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1
  Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit
  Message-ID: <cancelIM00XX.yHz@lugnet.com>
  X-Member-Id: 000

Then change the subject to cmsg cancel with the original Message-ID

  Subject: cmsg cancel <IM00XX.yHz@lugnet.com>

Finally add a cancel control header with the original Message-ID.

  Control: cancel <IM00XX.yHz@lugnet.com>

And end it all with a dot (all alone at the beginning of a line).
  .

Now you're ready.  Type post.  Hit return and paste the new headers,
and don't forget the dot at the end.  Finally, wait for the confirmation
email to authenticate the cancel.

The authentication email contained some sort of slur against my
news reader (as if it were inferior or something) probably because
my headers shoulda been trimmed down a bit more.

Now as you said, how do we get this implemented as a button on the
web page?

(...) I have only used Outlook express and Pine. With Outlook express you just select the message, then Message / Cancel Message from the menu (don't choose Edit / Delete - that just removes it from your local drive!). And wait for the confirmation (...) (19 years ago, 3-Sep-05, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)
