I have trouble believing this, but as far as I can tell (and I asked several
people who know more than I) there is no good way, short of patching the
code. Apparently, the numlock key acts as a modifier in X, and it might
somehow confuse some old programs if it's on.
The best suggestion I found was to remap the keyboard so the un-numlocked
keys send the numbers (and vice versa, if you wish).

| (...) missed the first message about this, but 'setleds' seems like it would do the trick. try adding '/usr/bin/setleds -D +num' to your x startup script. or am i .. missing a deeper question that was in the original message? :) (24 years ago, 22-Jun-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

| Hey all, While we're injecting more life into .geek, can anyone tell me how I can force numlock on when I start my X session? I'm (currently) using KDE v1.x, but I'd rather it be a generic X solution... Thanks, - jsproat (24 years ago, 21-Jun-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)
