Well, after putting together my own 850 (Celeron 566 oc'ed) and upgrading
Rachael's machine to the same thing, I am left with a couple of 300a's that
run fine at 450.  So I'm thinking of putting together a couple of cheap boxes -
one Linux to play with Apache and stuff, and one, maybe, as a dedicated
webtv/mp3 player.

I've got the processor for sure, a nic, cdrom, and probably a hard drive or
two to throw in it, so I'd basically be looking at getting a case, mb, memory,
scsi controller, and maybe a video card.  Maybe because I have a Matrox Marvel
G200-TV in Rachael's machine that I could use if I buy her a new card (or buy
myself a GeForce 2 and give her my Ultra TNT2 <g>).

So here are some rambling thoughts on it - feel free to comment or make
suggestions.

First, I don't expect to do a ton of work with this on the TV.  Even on my 36"
tv I know I won't be able to handle lots of text-based stuff - maybe some
surfing for fun (maybe), maybe some light gaming (it's only a 450 and unless I
go with a better 3D card that has TV out I won't be playing any of my shooters
anyway), but mostly using it to control the mp3 playing, I guess.

Second, I thought of maybe trying to do this with Linux as well but I'm not
sure if a) I can get TV out to work on the Marvel or b) if I can get it to
work with any other card.

Third, I'm using a Plextor 12/20 CDROM in this that will rip CDs at at least
4x, maybe 8x, and the first thing I want to do is re-rip my whole CD
collection at the best quality.  I know speed on the HD won't be much of a
factor so I am thinking of getting a large new HD (I only have an old 5 and 10
gig laying around, one of those needing to be RMA'ed and one of them has to go
in the Linux box) so I won't have to worry about space.  I've seen Maxtor's
new 61 gig drive (5400rpm) but it's $299 and how could I ever fill up 61 gigs
with mp3s - well, without stealing them anyway.

Fourth, I am really fond of my new Logitech cordless pro mouse (just like the
large Mouseman+ I have - 4 buttons, wheel, etc) so I am planning on getting
some sort of wireless keyboard+mouse setup.  Logitech's cordless desktop seems
like a good choice, although I will have to get a ps/2 extension cable(s) to
push the receiver far enough from the tv to be within 6 feet of my recliner to
make it work.  Any other wireless keyboard/mice out there with greater range?
Any wireless keyboards with trackball mice included on the keyboard?

Any thoughts welcome - including choices for encoding packages, etc.
