As you may know, there was a third explosion at the base
of the South Tower. It's gone. I can't even imagine how
many dead there are--but people were jumping, willing to
take their chances that way rather than stay inside according
to reports.
You can see the smoke from here, 30 miles away. The North
tower is still standing, but who knows if it was similarly
double-sabotaged. One plane was from Logan, the other from
Newark apparently.
I'm feeling very ill. All long distance telephone service
is down as far as I can tell--and I don't know if the Inter
net problems are all traffic or possibly otherwise related
to this. People are blaring radios, and I can see them in
the streets. It's a calamity, and I think here it's going
to be particularly bad because so many in Highland Park work
in NYC and at the Trade Center.
Keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Does anyone else
in the NYC area know if the authorities are yet mobilizing
volunteers?
