I understood how the movie "explained" it. I just didn't think it felt right.
It was pretty melodramatic.

I believe it was a repeated strategy used on multiple continents and I think
the first that I know of it being done is during the crusades against the holy
land where the English would burn mosques (or whatever) full of patrons.
But I think it was one of the scenes that was supposed to be a tear jerker and
it just didn't work. For me.
