It's worse than that. In fact, the Canadian Shield is pretty much a uniform
place--everything from northern Ohio to Minnesota to Ontario is a gentle
gradiation of attitude and midwestern twang. In fact, a lot of people have mixed
families; I come from one of those, red-headed bastard stepchild of two nations
that I be, eh. I wouldn't expect anyone who didn't live near the YooEss-Canucka
border to understand it, though. ;) "It's a border thing..."
The way I understand it, it's something of a big secret--nobody wants to admit to
it on either side of the border, but the worlds of Houghton, MI and Sault Ste.
Marie, ON are pretty darn near identical, save the taxes and the anthem. (Oh, and
the favourite hockey team.) I won't sully Ontario with trying to compare Windsor
with Detroit, however. That whole area is a mess since the casinos went up. Then
again, Canada has the Quebecois. So we all have our own little penances to
perform.

Sorry, mate, the US Navy is dry like a duck--swimmin' in the stuff, but not
admitting to any of it. It was eradicated in 1922 (IIRC) when the Guv'mint
extended Prohibition to the Navy (ships at sea). I guess they decided it was a
fine idea to keep; fortunately, it seems not to have hurt productivity too much.
But my father (who used to drink and smoke with the other midshipmen down in the
powder magazine of the Missouri in 1948--yeah, yeah, but who's gonna look
*there*?) and a couple college buddies (who were complete boozehound nuke techs on
board attack subs) kind of put the torch to that theory. It's kind of like saying
"There is no drinking of alcohol under the age of 21 in the United States."
Legally true, but in practice highly flawed. No beer machines, though.

I'll bet there aren't beer machines on US ships because all the good beer needs to
be imported (or comes in glass bottles, a no-no on board IIRC).
