And the number one most useless pieces.... is not, a piece as such, more of • a
situation...
1: Half of a matched pair. (sets of wings, part of a hinge, etc)

My big gripe is the 1 x 2 plate 2 finger and 3 finger hinge pieces. TLG does • a
good job matching colors in sets, but I always end up with two 1 x 2 plate 2
finger hinge pieces in white (1) and two 1 x 2 plate 3 finger hinge pieces in
black (1).  It would be nice if they could give you one of each in each color
so that you could make a matching color pair later on.  I always seem to run
out of the black 1 x 2 plate 3 finger hinge pieces because I use them with • the
2 finger tiled hinge pieces.

(1) insert any complimentary colors here

I wouldn't count hinge-plates in pairs, because there are a fair number
of elements with 2- or 3-finger hinges which aren't paired -- the
control lever (rod with end-stud and 3-finger hinge), the robot finger
(3L rod with 3-finger hinge at one end, turned 2-finger hinge at the
other), 2x2 turntable with 3-hinge, the horse bracket with 2-hinge, etc,
etc.

OK Point well taken.  I was speaking strictly from the instance where the
hinges are used in pairs.  I can see not including the mating hinge half
when using it with other elements, but my opinion remains unchanged when
you have a pair of hinges with different colored halves.  It would be nice
if I were able to make an all white hinge and an all blue hinge, instead
of two blue and white hinges.

Now, the horizontally swinging hinges -- the brick or plate where the
hinge is at the corner of the pieces -- those are useless when you've
got only half the piece.

I agree whole heartedly with this.  Same scenario, only you don't have any
other elements which attach to these pieces.
