The Geneva auto show kicked off a little early this year. However, I was
unable to attened because of that :-( This years show, though, was not as big
as previous years. Here are some highlights:

Alfa Romeo 156 sport wagon-Just one more reason to cry about Alfa-Romeo's
demise from the US market. Absolutley, stunningly gorgeous.

Audi Allroad-This one will be doing head-to-head with the Volvo V70 XC Cross
Country, Volvo's best-selling model in the US. Power comes from a 2,7 litre
biturbo V6, same as in the Audi A6 2,7T. European sales start around June, US
sales around August.

BMW 3-Series Convertible-Nothing new to Americans, but it is making its Euro
debut. US and European sales start next month.

BMW X5-Nothing new to Americans, but it is making its Euro debut. US sales
have started. European sales start in early summer.

Chrysler Sebring Sedan-A last minute introduction, the new Jeep KJ was
originailly planned, another sexy sedan from Chrysler. Coupe version to be
shown in New York; convertible in Miami (or possibly New York). US sales start
in the fall for sedan and coupe, December for convertible in Miami, January in
other markets. European sales start in spring for sedan and convertible only.

Ford-A new Galaxy is being shown. The Galaxy is one of Europe's favourite mini-
vans and is very different from the American Windstar.

GM Speedster-A new roadster from GM, designed and built with Lotus. To be sold
as Opel in Europe and Vauxhall in the UK. US sales are likely, however, brand
has yet to be selected.

Honda Insight-Nothing new to Americans, but the new Insight hybrid was shown.
Sales have started in the US, summer in Europe.

Mazda Tribute-Nothing new to Americans, but the Tribute mini-SUV is being
shown in Europe for the first time.

Mercedes-Benz SLK320-Nothing new to Americans, but the SLK320 will make its
European debut. US sales start around May.

Mitsubishi Pajero-Nothing new to Americans, but the new Pajero is being shown
in Europe for the first time. Pajero in Europe, Shogun un UK, Montero in US.

Nissan Maxima QX-Nothing new to Americans, but the new Maxima is being shown
in Europe for the first time.

Renault Avantime-A production version is being shown. The new 2-door mini-van
features a 6-speed manual and a V6. To be priced at around $40,000 in Europe,
$35,000 in the US. To be badged as an Infiniti in the US.

Rolls-Royce Corniche-Nothing new to Americans, but the Corniche makes its Euro
debut.

www.cars.com and www.automotivenews.com are good information and picture
sources. The next, and last, major 2000 show is New York. The season kicks off
again in October with Paris and Miami on both sides of the Atlantic. Debuts
planned for Paris and Miami include new small sedans from Audi, Mercedes-Benz
and Jaguar. Also, Mercedes-Benz will begin selling its cargo and passenger
vans in the US starting sometime in 2001, with some help from Frieghtliner,
one of its US truck subsidiaries.
