I can kinda sympathize with you Louise. My younger brother's best friend used to
come over to our house all the time after school and weekends. Nice kid, just had a
huge appetite and the metabolism of 5 people - always eating. He used to come into
our house, go to the fridge and open the door and start rummaging around for stuff
to eat. My parents were far too nice to ever say anything about it, and I followed
their lead for quite awhile until the day he came in, grabbed a frozen pizza and
started cooking it. I proceeded to rip him a new one, kicked him out of the house
and told him not to come back unless he brought his own food.
The kicker is, his grandmother called about 15 minutes later to complain to my mom
that I had been rude to him! He lived with his grandparents and they're quite well
off, I guess they're just lacking in common manners - ask before you take, say
thank you, etc.. He had to have learned his habits from somewhere, either they
tolerated them or didn't think anything wrong of them, at any rate, these are the
kinds of things that are "inherited" essentially. Don't just blame the kids, some
of it should go to their parents also. Keep showing the kids how a responsible
adult should act, they'll start to catch on after awhile. My brothers friend turned
out to be a pretty decent human being afterall, and he's teaching his kids better
than he was taught.
