Can't say much more about it, though perhaps others can indicate where
concerned folks can read more about it.

Try http://ca.water.usgs.gov/mtbe/ for a good overview of MTBE.

If you are really interested in the science of MTBE you can search the US
Geological Survey website at http://www.usgs.gov or the EPA website at
http://www.epa.gov .

MTBE is a pretty scary substance, it is the most widely used oxygenate in
the US with approximately 8 billion kg produced in 1995.  In 1996 and 1997,
public and scientific concerns prompted an assessment of the use of MTBE
effects on the environment and human health.  It was found to be a potential
human carcinogen.  It also moves easily through water and soils, which makes
it difficult to remediate contaminated areas.

There was a good article from the point of view of an environmental activist
in the Earth Island Journal a few issues back, you can check out their
website at www.earthisland.org .  There was also a good story in the
Washington Post a while back.

Sorry for being off topic.
