I wish I could help, but I don't live in Texas, and I don't hire people.
One suggestion would be to try networking at user groups meetings, such as
Linux user groups, or slashdot meetups.
Another suggestion is to try temp agencies. I started work in my current
corporation as a contract software tester 13 years ago. I learned a lot, and
made enough contacts to eventually get hired direct.
Don't count out working tech support on a hotline, it can be a way to get a
foot in the door.
Good luck, graduating in a recession can be rough ( I flunked out of grad
school during Bush seniors' recession.).
